💍 My Top 3 Takeaways from My First Year of Marriage
Recently, a good friend told me that I was smart to wait until after 50 to get married. I laughed, because I certainly didn’t plan it that way—but she wasn’t wrong. My timeline wasn’t strategic, but it was divinely orchestrated. I trusted the process, kept my faith, and somehow ended up exactly where I was meant to be: here, in Southern France, married to a man whose love and support make this chapter of life extraordinary.
As we celebrate one year of marriage, I’ve been reflecting on what this journey has revealed to me. Here are my top three takeaways:
3. Solitude Still Matters—Even in Marriage
One of the biggest adjustments after living independently for so long is learning how to share life without losing myself. Solitude is still essential.
I structure my day so that by the time my husband comes home—usually mid-afternoon—I’ve completed my work, practiced my French, connected with friends back in the States, and ticked off my to-do list. That way, I can give him my undivided attention.
It creates balance: I stay productive and fulfilled on my own, which makes me more present in our shared time. He sees that I am neither frustrated nor restless, and in turn, he feels free to handle his vineyard work, feed the chickens, or take care of family matters, knowing I am thriving too.
2. Experience Is a Gift to the Household
One thing I didn’t expect was how much my experience would become a form of contribution. My years of independence taught me resilience, resourcefulness, and how to move through challenges with grace.
In our marriage, this often means counseling my husband through difficult moments or offering a new perspective. While I continue building my brand and learning the language, I find comfort in knowing I am a supportive and capable partner. Sometimes, the most valuable thing I bring to the table isn’t material—it’s emotional steadiness.
1. To Whom Much Is Given, Much Is Required
This is the lesson that anchors everything else. I have been blessed with a loving husband, a beautiful home overlooking the Mediterranean, and the freedom to pursue my passions. With those blessings comes responsibility.
My personal goals are no longer just mine—they belong to us. Elevating my dreams means elevating our lifestyle, creating opportunities for both of us, and ensuring that the legacy we are building is strong. The life we share is not just a gift; it’s also a call to keep evolving.
🌿 A Year of Learning, A Lifetime Ahead
If my first year of marriage has taught me anything, it’s that love in midlife isn’t about losing yourself—it’s about finding new layers of who you are, while building something extraordinary with someone else.
I may not have planned this timeline, but I wouldn’t change a thing.
