Speaking It Into Existence: A Midlife Love Letter to Reinvention
Last night, I watched Cree Summer—the luminous force behind “A Different World”—tell ET’s Kevin Frazier something that landed in my chest and stayed there. When asked what she’d tell her younger self during those groundbreaking ADW days, she said simply: “Stay sharp, because perhaps you will always have to prove yourself.”
Then she smiled that knowing smile and added she’s thrilled to be starring in an upcoming love story featuring women over 50. Her reason?
“Because we ain’t dead.”
After shedding a lot of skin (figuratively) I’m seeing with more clarity, speaking with more grace and feeling at more at peace than ever.
The Art of the Audacious Pivot
There’s something intoxicating about watching a woman claim her narrative on her own terms. Cree’s words reminded me why I’m here, writing this on a Monday morning with the Mediterranean stretching endlessly blue beyond my window, my French husband humming in the vineyard below, the weight of decades lived fully settling into something new.
At 47, I didn’t just change my address. I demolished the entire blueprint.
“After decades navigating the vibrant chaos of New York City, I chose the picturesque chaos of reinvention instead.”
I left the city that never sleeps for a generational farm where the rhythms are dictated by harvest seasons and sunset over ancient hills. I married a man who doesn’t speak my language—and discovered that love, like purpose, transcends vocabulary. I went back to school, not because I needed credentials, but because I needed permission to become someone I’d never been.
The Courage to Design Your Own Life
Convention whispers that our middle years are for consolidating, for accepting, for gracefully stepping aside. Convention can respectfully have a seat.
Our middle years are for launching.
They’re for recognizing that the first half of life taught us what we can survive, and the second half is for discovering what makes us feel gloriously, messily, magnificently alive.
“This wasn’t merely about acquiring new knowledge but about fundamentally redefining what midlife can mean.”
I leveraged financial aid at an age when I was supposedly settled. I learned to communicate in gestures and broken phrases with the man I chose to build a life with. I traded subway tiles for grapevines, sirens for cicadas, ambition for intention.
And here’s what I know now that I didn’t know then:
The scariest decisions make the best stories.
Monday Morning Manifestation
So here I am, starting this week the way Cree Summer inspired me to—with audacity, with clarity, with the kind of faith that might look like delusion to the uninitiated.
My intention: To land a major motion picture deal, filmed right here on our farm and vineyard overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
Wild? Perhaps. Impossible? I’ve done impossible before—I moved to France at midlife and made it work. I built a marriage without a common language. I proved that reinvention isn’t reserved for the young; it’s the birthright of the brave.
“My experience demonstrates that our middle years can be a powerful launching point rather than a plateau.”
If Hollywood can celebrate women over 50 in love stories, if Cree Summer can claim her place after years of being told to stay sharp and prove herself, then I can speak this vision into existence. Our land, with its rolling hills and ancient stones and light that cinematographers dream about, deserves to be seen. Our story—of cross-cultural love, of midlife courage, of choosing beauty over comfort—deserves to be told.
What This Means for You
Maybe you’re not trying to land a film deal. Maybe your dream looks different—a career pivot, a creative project, a relationship that defies expectations, a move that terrifies and thrills you in equal measure.
The question isn’t whether you’re qualified. The question is whether you’re willing to bet on yourself the way you’d bet on someone you believed in completely.
Because we ain’t dead.
And as long as we’re breathing, we’re allowed to want more, try again, start over, and speak our wildest dreams into the universe with our whole chest.
So here’s to Monday mornings filled with intention. Here’s to women who refuse to shrink. Here’s to the audacity of midlife reinvention.
Here’s to speaking it into existence…

My story is about:
– Trading urban intensity for rural tranquility while maintaining purpose
– Building cross-cultural relationships despite language differences
– Embracing education later in life as a path to reinvention
– Finding the courage to design a life aligned with personal values
– Creating new beginnings when convention suggests settling down
So Here I am starting the week with intention: To land a major motion picture deal, filmed on our home, farm & Vineyard overlooking the mediterranean sea.
